2 students died and 3 others were injured after they plunged into a well which collapsed, on Friday, at the Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State.

Witnesses said seven students were relaxing by the well around Kudirat Hostel when the well suddenly caved in, killing two of them.

The injured were said to be receiving treatment at Irrua Specialist Hospital, while the dead have been put in a mortuary.

The incident sparked protests among students of the university, who barricaded the Benin-Auchi Road, forcing the users to seek alternative routes.

In an apparent move to avert chaos, the authorities of the university ordered all students to vacate the campus and proceed on Easter holidays.

The Deputy Registrar, Mr Chris Adamaigbo, confirmed the collapse of the well, but denied the death of any student.

He said those who were affected by the incident were rescued and taken to the hospital.
