The incessant cult clash rocking Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa State, continued on Monday morning as two persons were gunned down during a violent attack between rival cult groups.
A top security source said the clash was between members of a cult group identified as Highlanders and those of Greenlanders.
Residents around Onopa in Yenagoa Local Government Area where the incident occurred, were gripped with fear as the warring cultists attacked each other with guns, axes, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons.
Though, the reason for the clash could not be ascertained, sources informed the Nigerian Tribune that it might be as a result of supremacy tussle.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bayelsa State police command, ASP Eguaveon Emopkae, confirmed the killings, saying that it occurred within the jurisdiction of the “A” Division, which covers Onopa, the scene of the clash.
He, however, added that he was still awaiting signal from the division, which would provide full details of the violence.
While disclosing that the police were committed to finding those behind the killings, Emopkae assured that the security agencies were on top of the situation.
