Over 30 suspected cultists reportedly attacked police patrol team X-Squad Unit/Operation Skolombo at Iyamba Street, Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State at about 9:30p.m on Tuesday, October 11th.
While the officers were on patrol at Ikwa street, off Iyamba street, Calabar, they were attacked by the hoodlums suspected to be cultists.
The attack allegedly claimed the lives of two policemen and one cultist.
An eyewitness in the area said the suspected cultists, numbering about 30, also set two security patrol vehicles ablaze during the sudden attack.
He added that:
“The over twenty suspected cultists were taking a revenge on the security operatives for attacking them earlier in the day and preventing their free for all fight with a rival cult group.”
But, the police command, through DCP Gbolarumi, in her quarterly briefing, told newsmen that only one of its personnel; Inspector Edet Archibong, was gunned down in the attack.
A freelance Journalist Inyali Peter added that:
One Inspector Edet Archibong was shot and later died, while Sgt Awo Obongha is still receiving treatment at UCTH.
“So far, a total number of eight (8) suspects were arrested in connected with the crime. Investigation is ongoing, suspects will soon be charged to court”, he said.
The commissioner explained that within the period under review, a total of 22 suspects; comprising cultists, kidnappers, one chance syndicates and armed robbers were arrested.
He solicited the cooperation of the public in the fight against crime, encouraging those with issues against the criminals to lodge their complaints at any of the nearest police divisions or its headquarters.
